WARREN 2nd Story Theatre brings a double dose of laughter to the Bristol Statehouse, 240 High St., with two French comedies, “The Suitors” by Jean Racine (translated into rhyming verse by Richard Wilbur) and Molière’s “A Doctor In Spite of Himself.” Performances are from Nov. 18 to Dec. 18.
“The Suitors” is a riotous rhyming verse romp that provides ample opportunity for disorder in the court, hazing both the legal profession and the lawsuit-happy litigants who keep the judges well bribed, the lawyers well heeled, and the audience in stitches.
Artistic Director Ed Shea said, “I’ve always said that plays in rhyming verse are Dr. Seuss for adults, and ‘The Suitors’ is no exception.”
Laughter is indeed the best medicine in Molière’s “A Doctor in Spite of Himself,” where a simple marital squabble escalates into comic pandemonium and gives a whole new meaning to “playing doctor.”
Mr. Shea called the double bill “a perfect back-to-back pairing of French masters,” adding that the historic Bristol Statehouse is “an ideal backdrop for what promises to be a joyous celebration.”
Previews are at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. Preview tickets are $15.
Regular performances are at 7 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 and 7 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 25 to Dec. 18. Tickets are $25 for regular performances (under 21 tickets are $20).
A special presentation of the comedies will benefit programs offered by Mosaico CDC. Mosaico will host the fund-raising event featuring the 2nd Story Theatre presentation of “The Suitors” by Jean Racine and “A Doctor in Spite of Himself” by Molière, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Bristol Statehouse, 240 High St.
A reception is at 7 p.m., followed by the plays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. All proceeds benefit Mosaico’s programs.
