King Philip Little League holds elections

King Philip Little League will hold elections for their 2012 Board of Directors on Thursday, October 13th from 7-9pm at the Elder Care Lounge on Wood Street. Anyone who had a BCI check done for the 2011 season is considered a voting member. Please come and cast your vote

BYSA Spring Competitive Soccer Tryouts

Barrington Soccer will be conducting tryouts for the 2012 spring competitive season. The teams are coached by advanced licensed coaches and emphasize individual development within a team structure. Barrington Soccer Club is for the motivated soccer player who can commit to regular attendance at practices and games. The teams welcome players from East Bay and SE Mass. Tryouts will be held October 15th and 22nd for U10 players and on October 16th for U12 & U14. Pop Warner cheerleaders gear up for conference championship

The Rhode Island & Southeast Massachusetts (RISMA) Conference will hold the 2011 Cheerleading and Dance Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Academy Field House Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the competitive divisions will start at noon.

Twelve New England Pop Warner organizations (33 teams total) will compete with the hope of advancing to the regional championships. Among the local teams competing are the Barrington Eagles, East Bay Warriors, Portsmouth Patriots and Sakonnet Schooners.

In addition, one Pop Warner Challenger team, a special needs team which traveled to nationals last year, will be exhibiting at 11 a.m.

All-day tickets can be pre-ordered for $25. Tickets per session can be purchased at the door for $15 (children under 5 are free). Please contact Jody Schlacter at (401) 808-9179 or cheercoordinator@risma.org for ticket information.

Please enter on the building through the Cranston Street entrance. Parking is available in the Citizens Bank parking lot after business hours only. School parking lots are available for spectators. Street parking is reserved for busses.

Registration for 5K race in Warren begins

The Tigers 5 K Road Race/2-Mile Walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 23, at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima High School (360 Market St., Rte. 136, Warren, RI 02885). Registration, at www.fatimahs.org, begins Sept. 17, at 4 a.m. and closes Oct. 22 at 11:59 p.m. The $20 registration fee is the same for either the race or the walk. For more info call 401/245-4449. Proceeds from the race are used to fund Fatima High School athletic programs and scholarships.

Road race takes place on Greenway Trail Nov. 5

The Aquidneck Land Trust’s 4th Annual 5K Run/Walk Race for Open Space will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10:30 p.m., beginning at the polo fields at The Glen in Portsmouth. Registration for the race, which will take place on the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, will be held from 9 to 10:15 a.m. the day of the event. The race-day fees are $15 for ages 19 and under, $25 for those 20 and over and $60 per family. The family fee is for four or more members living in the same household. Pre-registration can be done on-line at www.racewire.com. The pre-registration fees are $10 for ages 19 and under, $20 for those 20 and over and $50 per family. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor should call 401/849-2799 ext. 18. Proceeds from the event will go toward helping ALT build the next and final segment of the Trail.

Portsmouth hoops league signups underway on-line

On-line registration (www.portsmouthyouthbasketball.com) for the Portsmouth Youth Basketball League (PYB) is underway until Saturday, Nov. 5. Boys and girls in grades two to eight are eligible to participate. Early registration is recommended due to limited space. The registration fee is $100 per player with a family maximum of $225. Youths will participate in one of four age-appropriate divisions. Games will be held Saturdays with a weekly practice to take place at various local gyms. Skills evaluation happens Saturday, Nov. 12, at Portsmouth High School. Volunteer coaches and managers are needed.
