Pop Warner: Warriors meet rival Eagles for first time since merger

East Bay hosts Barrington at Vets Field

— The new East Bay Warriors squared off against their old rivals, the Barrington Eagles, in Rhode Island-Southeastern Massachusetts Pop Warner Football League action Saturday, Sept. 24, at Vets Field, the locals winning in both the Pee Wee and Jr. Pee Wee Divisions.

The East Bay Pee Wees improved to 3-1 on the season with a 34-0 victory over the Eagles. Offensively, the Warriors were clicking on all cylinders. In the first quarter quarterback Ryan Ramos hooked up with Austin Cooley on a touchdown strike. Ramos added the point after and the Warriors jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never looked back. Matt Ditondo and Jake Ribeiro added two more touchdowns each and another PAT from Ramos rounded off the scoring at 34.

Defensively the Warriors held Barrington scoreless behind the great play off Ashton Begin, Coby Castriotta, DJ Macado, Damian Mendoza, Jeremy Thiboutot, Aaron Rocha, and Rick James. Offensively the O line play of Zack Francis, Jeff Silva, Neil Thibodeau, Caden Cabral, Connor McKenna, Jacob Sarza, and Ty Couto led the way for the Warrior running backs.

Jr. Pee Wees

The East Bay Jr. Pee Wees also improved to 3-1 for the fall after they defeated the Eagles, 40-6.

The Warriors’ touchdowns were scored by Cam Nappi, Nick Gerling, Josh Pompey (two), and Vinny “Bada Bing” Berretto (two). Berretto scored on a long QB sweep and also scored on the receiving end of a nice pass by QB Matt Defelice. One of Pompey’s touchdowns came on an excellent return off a Barrington kick-off and the other was on a toss around the left end. Nappi scored on a toss around the right end, and Gerling scored on a nice counter off the left side of the line. None of the scores could have been possible without the exceptional blocking which was again provided by the offensive lines, tight ends, and split ends.

The defense also came up big, making multiple exceptional plays. Standouts on defense included Max Moskala, who came up and made multiple tackles from his cornerback position. Cam Nappi, Joey Penkala, and Ben Dube also had excellent defensive games. Dube made the defensive play of the game when he hustled down the sideline to catch a Barrington running back who had a twenty yard lead on him, and his hustle saved a sure touchdown by the Eagles.

Mitey Mites

The East Bay Mitey Mites suffered a tough loss to Barrington on Saturday afternoon, 7-6. Offensive yards were tough to come by in this defensive battle. The lone touchdown was scored by Jordan Pompey on an incredible run down the left sideline for 50 yards.

The defense was led by the tackling of Linebacker Dylan Rego and Defensive Tackle Alex Hopkins. An interception by David Benevides late in first quarter was nearly returned for a touchdown before he was tackled from behind by a Barrington player.

Tiny Mites

The East Bay Tiny Mites hosted the Barrington Eagles. The Eagles came into this game with an explosive offense, trying to crack the Warrior defense which has not allowed a single point in 3 weeks, but were unable to do so. Leading the charge on defense was Collin O’Connell, Patrick Pitts, Hunter Kavanaugh and Andrew Ashley. Also, coming out with some big defensive plays were Gavin Winn and Jason Teeden.

Offensively, the Warriors were successful getting into the end zone with three touchdowns. Kaden Silva started the charge with a 37 yard touchdown, followed by Nicholas Andreozzi on a quarterback keeper from 68 yards out. The offensive highlight of the day was when Patrick Pitts scored a touchdown from 65 yards out only to get called back on a penalty. On the very next play Pitts was able to run the ball again, breaking 9 tackles to score a 65 yard touchdown.

More scores

The East Bay Midgets fell to the Eagles, 38-7. The Warriors also fell at Jr. Midgets, 21-6.
