To the editor:
The attached letter, dated Jan. 10, 1986, from Joe Paterno pertained to an article published in the Bristol Phoenix that I forwarded to him.
I didn’t make a copy of the article, and, if I can correctly recollect, it stated that when Joe attended Brown University he came to Bristol to play basketball in the gymnasium of the Andrews Memorial building.
Since college athletes weren’t allowed to play in the off season, he enrolled to play in Bristol under the name “Shine Hall.”
He personally acknowledged receiving my letter and Bristol Phoenix article the following summer in Stone Harbour, N.J., with his comment, “Oh! You’re the guy!”
