BRISTOL With an eye towards earning a home game in the upcoming league championship playoffs, the Mt. Hope High School girls’ basketball team gained a victory it needed against a lesser opponent late in the season as the Huskies handled visiting Warwick Vets, 50-38, Thursday night, Feb. 9, in a Division II-South contest.
Mt. Hope received good all-around team play in the contest, according to head coach Mike Almeida, against a Hurricanes squad that dipped to 1-13 with the loss. Christie Ribeiro led the locals as she has most of the season with 18 points. Marissa Silva chipped in 10.
The Huskies improved to 8-6 in the II-South standings and finished the evening in a share of third place with Cranston East. Narragansett and Rogers currently set the pace atop of the division with 12-1 records. The top four teams from II-South at the end of the regular season will be at home for the opening round of the playoffs.
Mt. Hope gets right back in action Friday night, Feb. 10, when the Huskies travel to West Warwick to face the seventh-place, 6-7 Wizards at 7 o’clock.
Mt. Hope boys fall
Any far-fetched chance the Mt. Hope High boys’ basketball team could make the playoffs ended late Wednesday night, Feb. 8, when the Huskies suffered a 49-30 loss to visiting Middletown in a Division III-South outing.
The loss left the locals with a 4-11 record and unable to reach the minimum required 40-percent mark needed to qualify for the revamped Open State Tournament.
Mt. Hope has been injury-riddled down the stretch and sophomore point guard Kyle Valenzuela was added to the list Wednesday when he went down hard after running into a screen near the end of the first half. Mike Head led the Huskies with 12 points. Ben Francis added 10 and Nick Murgo six.
The Huskies close out their season over the next 10 days beginning with a home date, Feb. 10, against Exeter-West Greenwich at 7 p.m.
