Food for Friends helps Bristol Good Neighbors

— Some donated once when they came in, others gave a couple of bucks every time they bought groceries, raising a handsome sum recently for Bristol Good Neighbors.

The Stop & Shop on Metacom Avenue collected $3,740 for its Food for Friends fund-raiser this year. The money is being donated this week to Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry at St. Michael’s Church.

From November through December, customers enjoyed a hot dog outside the supermarket on weekends or bought paper turkeys for a donation of $1 to $5 to the soup kitchen. Stop & Shop donated $500 to the total.

“We’re very happy with the way the fund-raiser turned out for 2011, especially with the way the economy is right now. We’re happy to help the people who need it,” said Stop & Shop store manager Michael Coleman. “We saw customers who, every time they came in shopping, did a $1, $3 or $5 donation.”
